It's also intensely upsetting when starting medication. On the one hand, many mood stabilizers feature side effects like, oh, depression. Mine had significant cognitive impacts, slowed down my reading, shredded my short-term memory (oh, was I supposed to remember the beginning of that sentence, now that I'm into the second clause?), made me sleep 16 hours a day, triggered constant shakiness and intermittent muscle spasticity, and made the usually-static state of printed letters on the page a lot less consistent. That last one was weird enough, I genuinely wondered if I was just hallucinating in some fun new way, until I confirmed it with an aunt on the same medication, with the same side-effect.
